It recognizes that there is a hd in device manager but in my computer it just shows up as the drive letter. A) have you tried reformatting the drive using the disk management system or the software that came with the drive? I got the recovery window open and it indicated it could not.

If you see the drive in disk management as unallocated or if it's not initialized, you would need to initialize, partition, format and assign a letter to the drive.
